What if you need to relinquish?

Whenever problems occur in the home with a companion parrot, Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary will try to work with the owner to help resolve those issues. We offer many free classes that could help. However, at Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary we also understand and recognize that circumstances do arise that make it very difficult or impossible to adequately care for a bird. Therefore, in these circumstances, an assessment of the bird will be conducted and a determination made whether it would be an adoptable bird, eligible to be added to our wait list. Waiting times can vary according to the number of birds already on the wait list and the number of birds adopted.

Whenever a bird is found to be in a life-threatening situation, Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary will attempt to make room in the program for that bird immediately. Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary will also try to make room in the program to accept birds that are found outdoors or abandoned. Efforts to locate the owner will be made before placing the bird into the Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary adoption program.

All birds entering the Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary program are seen and treated by an avian veterinarian. At the time of surrender, owners are asked to make a tax-deductible donation to offset this expense, as well as the upkeep of the bird until adoption. Inability to cover this expense will not disqualify any bird from entering the program. Owners are asked to donate the bird’s current cage and supplies to provide some security and continuity during transition. Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary reserves the right to upgrade the cage if deemed inappropriate and dispose of or re-use the old cage.

If you are in a situation where you feel you must surrender your bird, please contact Safe Beak Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary. You must submit a questionnaire about your bird to assist in transition and placement. Click here to access the form. Once their application is received, they will receive a confirmation that their bird has been added to the waiting list.

We will do our best to take your bird in as soon as possible, but are unable to guarantee an exact date. We do not contact you again until your birds space becomes availble but you are welcome to reach out to us at any time for updated information.
